Israel Iran War: World’s Largest Gas Field In Iran Bombed

Israel Iran War: As the conflict raged between Israel and Iran, both the countries are exchanging a wave of missile attacks overnight into Sunday.

The regional conflict is expanding to global affect as the world’s largest gas field was bombed by Israel. The South Pars gas field which is located offshore in Iran’s Bushehr Province and shared with Qatar is the world’s largest natural gas reserve.

An Israeli airstrike on it caused a fire at one of the key processing units on Saturday. Iran was forced to partially halt gas production. The Israeli attack hit Phase 14 of the offshore site which led to the suspension of 12 million cubic metres of gas output per day.

This was Israel’s first direct strike on Iran’s oil and gas infrastructure.

Iran is the world’s third-largest gas producer following United States and Russia. Iran generates about 6.5% of global output which comes around 275 billion cubic metres (bcm) annually.

Until now, Israeli strikes focused on Iran’s military and nuclear assets. But targeting energy infrastructure, signals that economic warfare is now in play.

Escalation in th Middle-East region raised fears of attacks on other critical choke points like Kharg Island (Iran’s main oil export terminal) and the Strait of Hormuz, through which 21% of the world’s LNG and 14 million barrels of crude oil daily gets transported.

Iranian state television announced the operation name as “Honest Promise 3”.

Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards confirmed Israeli strikes on their energy infrastructure. It stated

Installations producing fuel for fighter planes and the (Israeli) regime’s energy supply centres were targeted by a multitude of drones and missiles.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have consistently stated that Iran was not developing a nuclear weapon prior to Israel launching its wave of airstrikes on Friday.

Iranian strikes on Israel killed at least 8 people including children. Also, In the central part of the country, a rocket strike claimed at least 4 individuals and left around 100 others injured.
