Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has decided to open Ratna Bhandar which is marked by a mix of caution and curiosity. There are many old stories related to Ratna Bhandar protection. As per those stories, many believe that many venomous king cobras are protecting the treasury from all kinds of threats. The basis for such is found in recent times when snakes were found in the temple’s vicinity during its beautification under the Jagannath Heritage Corridor Project.
SJTA is preparing to open the Ratna Bhandar after 46 years. It is taking all the precautionary steps to esnsure safe opening of Puri Jagannath’s treasury. It is believed that there are 3 kind of ornaments in Ratna Bhandar – Firstly, the gold ornaments which are use to decorate Lord Jagannath during ocassions and festivals. Secondly, precious stones are stored which resembles his wealth. Thirdly, new ornaments that are never used to decorate the Jagannath’s idol till date.
Earlier, in 1978, the inventory check was conducted. It took approximately 2 months for the inspection i.e., from May 13 to July 23. In the history, Ratna Bhandar was opened only 4 times. On July 14th, 1985 Ratna Bhandar was opened to retrieve an ornament for Lord Balabhadra.
Related to Ratna Bhandar opening, SJTA issued a statement stating –
We have sent a draft SOP on the opening of Ratna Bhandar to the government for approval, where we have sought deployment of a snake charmer and a doctor/team of doctors during the opening of the divine treasury,
Though we are curious to know the types of ancient valuables in Ratna Bhandar, we are equally scared of the possible presence of snakes,
It is to be noted that a 16-member committee has proposed to the government to open the Ratna Bhandar for inventory and conservation from July 14,2024.

Meanwhile, SJTA is focusing on preventive measures by deploying a skilled snake charmer and the readiness of a medical team armed with a comprehensive medicine kit.
However, whether the legends about venomous king cobras hold true remains to be seen.
