An Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport today afternoon. This aircraft is one of the most modern passenger aircraft in service.
According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Air India Boeing 787 aircraft was heading to London with 242 people on board (230 passengers, 2 pilots, and 10 cabin crew members). The passengers included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals
Air India in a statement said –
Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad–London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. At this moment, we are ascertaining the details.
The flight, which departed from Ahmedabad at 13:38 hrs, was carrying 242 passengers and crew members on board the Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British nationals, 1 Canadian national and 7 Portuguese nationals,
The injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals,
Air India is giving its full cooperation to the authorities investigating this incident.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation said –

Data from flight tracking platform FlightRadar has revealed that the Air India plane gained an altitude of 625 feet before it crashed. The aircraft departed from runway 23. It gave a “Mayday” call, signalling an emergency just after the plane took off.
Rescue work is underway in the residential area of Ahmedabad’s Meghaninagar area. According to the Aviation minister’s office, all relevant agencies were on high alert and coordinated efforts were underway.
Emergency services, including fire engines, ambulances, and city police reached the site quickly to carry out rescue operations. All the crew members and all the passengers except 1 passenger died in the crash. Totally 241 people got killed in this plane crash.
Britain is working with Indian authorities to urgently establish the facts around the crash and to provide support to those involved.
DGCA is expected to initiate a formal investigation along with Boeing technical team.
