Anti-Netanyahu Protests Target His Resignation

Thousands of protestors gathered outside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem demanding his resignation.

Several Israelis feel that Netanyahu has failed in dealing with the COVID-19/ Coronavirus pandemic. Thousands of people lost their jobs and hence the anger outbursted in this manner on Saturday.

In recent times, the protest movement has intensified targeting Netanyahu. Along with the opposition, many Israeli’s charge him for corruption.

Because of an unclear mandate by the Israelis, Netanyahu took the prime minister post for the 5th consecutive time in May 2020.

However right-wing Likud party of Netanyahu called the riots as opposition’s tactics of destabilising his government. The party in a statement said that

Netanyahu is fighting to get Israel’s economy back to normal and to trasnfer funds and grants to Israeli citizens,

Because of the restrictions and the measures taken by Netanyahu’s government, due to the second surge of COVID-19 pandemic, the economy has plunged by 6%. At the same time, the unemployment problem has grown to 21.5%. Netanyahu’s approval ratings have contracted below 30%.

It is to be remembered that the latest elections held were on the basis of his corruption charges. To tackle the crisis and the criticisms against Netanyahu, his Twitter page said

Many efforts by the opposition have failed to bar Netanyahu from coming to power for the fifth time. The political turmoil after the election results favoured to get back to power for Netanyahu. He is also believed to have close relation with the Israel president, Reuven Rivlin.

Many analysts believe that the friendly relation between Rivlin and Netanyahu is also one of the causes for the later’s corruption chances. However, Netanyahu has discarded the corruption charges framed against him.
