G7 summit 2021: The G7 leaders met on Friday at the Carbis Bay Hotel in Carbis Bay to discuss Covid-19, climate, foreign policy and the economy.
US President Joe Biden, Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, France’s President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Draghi, Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel attended the G7 summit session hosted by Britain.

The G7 summit 2021 theme selected by UK is ‘Build Back Better’ in a nod to global recovery efforts post-COVID-19 pandemic. Also UK has UK has outlined 4 priority areas
- Leading the global recovery from coronavirus while strengthening resilience against future pandemics,
- Promoting future prosperity by championing free and fair trade,
- Tackling climate change and preserving the planet’s biodiversity and
- Championing shared values and open societies.
The G7 leaders hope that this particular meeting will energise the global economy. The US and Britain together represent 40% of global GDP and 10% of the world’s population.
During the summit, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that
she hopes G7 leaders achieve “very good results” on coronavirus vaccines and show the world “we’re not just thinking of ourselves.”
Johnson also affirmed the strong US-UK ties, saying,
The future of the world’s stability and prosperity lies in cooperation between the UK and the US, the closest of partners and the greatest of allies.
Both leaders, Biden-Johnson exchanged gifts to affirm strong ties. The US President gifted a handmade USD 6,000 bicycle while the British prime minister presented Biden with a photo of a 19th-century anti-slavery campaigner, Frederick Douglass.
On the other hand, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend in person but he will attend sessions of the UK-hosted G7 virtual summit today. Modi will be speaking in 3 sessions on June 12 and June 13 on the themes of “building back stronger”, “building back together” and “building back Greener”.
India had been invited by the G7 summit 2021 as a goodwill partner.
