Indian Animal & Bird Species On Decline - A Report

The 13th meeting of the United Nation‘s Wildlife Conservation conference was addressed related to critical threats to migratory species.

According to a report by State Of India’s Birds, 2020 was submitted at the conference, around 79% of Indian bird species are on a decline in the last five years. The reports are based on the research conducted by the last 25 years of data provided by birds lovers and watchers.

Notably, there is a sharp decline of over 50% of different types of species. Mainly Pink-headed duck and the Great Indian Bustard are in the top of the list of extinction. Also, vultures and bustards are facing the threat of extinction. Apart from this, Indian Cheetah has also reached the state of extinction. Overall 867 Indian species are in the list of endangering and extinction.

However, 101 species are placed in the list of high conservation concern. The only happy news is that the Indian National Bird “Peacock” is the only bird that has noted the rise in numbers.

Director of the Zoological Survey of India, Kailash Chandra said:

we have a database of more than 5.6 million specimens, collected from all over India and also from the neighbouring countries before independence. They give a lot of information about how things have changed in more than 100 years. If you see their distribution in geo-special platforms, you’ll realise how much changes have occurred because of the impact of deforestation and desertification.

Many more animal species in India are on the verge of becoming extinct and they currently fall under the category of critically endangered species. The statistics should be a matter of great concern as many birds and animals are getting extinct.

The main factor that has caused the situation of endangering for these animals and birds is unplanned development which includes deforestation, soil erosions and land degradation and increasing pollution.
