Indonesian Boeing 737-500 Plane Crashes Into Sea

Indonesia’s Sriwijaya Air plane Boeing 737-500 crashed into the sea after take-off on Saturday afternoon at 2.30 (0730 GMT) which is just 30 mins after take-off.

Sriwijaya Air plane was on its route to Pontianak in West Kalimantan with 62 people on board that started from Indonesia’s capital Jakarta.

Indonesian Transport Minister Budi Karya, in a press conference, said that there are about 62 people on board including 12 crew members. He also stated that the domestic flight crashed 20 km away from the airport near Laki Island. Flight SJ 182 was in a good condition before the flight but the weather was in bad condition as it was raining.

In a public statement made by one of the Boeing spokeswomen, she said –

We are aware of media reports from Jakarta, and are closely monitoring the situation. We are working to gather more information.

However, there is no immediate information of why Boeing 737-500 got crashed. Also, the number of casualties and deaths are yet to be figured out. Generally, the cockpit factors take months to establish the reason for the accident.

Some of the TV channels in Indonesia have shown the wreckage pictures of the plane. Some of the metal pieces and jeans cloth pieces were shown in television broadcasts.

Indonesia itself has a patchy air safety record. But, Jakarta-based Sriwijaya Air group flies largely within Indonesia since its foundation in the year 2003. Sriwijaya Air group has a solid safety record until this accident.

since the plane was designed and built in the United States, the U.S. National Safety Transportation Board will automatically be a part of the probe.
