Thailand Day-Care Shooting Kills 34 Including 22 Children

Thailand Day-Care Shooting ended up with the suspected gunman killing his family and himself. A total of 34 deaths were reported among which 22 were children.

The police said that the gunman was also a police lieutenant colonel, aged 34 years was discharged from the services in June last year for drug-related reasons.

On Thursday in Thailand Day-Care Shooting took place at lunchtime (i.e., around 12:30 pm) when 30 children were at the centre when the gunman came. The daycare centre is in the town of Uthai Sawan in the northeastern province of Nong Bua Lamphu.

The man first shot four or five staff, including a teacher who was eight months pregnant. 22 children were among 34 deaths which included children as young as 2 years old. 12 people were injured and have been taken to Nong Bua Lamphu district hospital. The motive for the attack remains unclear.

After Thailand Day-Care Shooting, the attacker fled the scene in a white 4-door Toyota pick-up truck with a Bangkok registration plate. He was armed with a shotgun, a pistol, and a knife.

The local police immediately launched a search for him and warned locals to keep indoors for their own safety.

After the police identified him as “Kamrab” and started a search operation, he returned home, killing his wife and son before taking his own life.

Though the rate of gun ownership is high, mass shootings are rare in Thailand compared with some other countries. However, illegal weapons are common in Thailand.

Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha described the shooting as “a shocking event”.
