1000 Years Old Chicken Egg Discovered in Israel

During a salvage excavation by a large-scale archaeological team headed by Dr. Elie Haddad, Liat Nadav-Ziv and Dr. Jon Seligman discovered a rare 1,000-year-old Chicken Egg Intact.

The excavations were taken up by the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) in the Yavne region. What remains astonishing is that the Chicken Egg remained intact for these many years without spoiling or getting broken. Usually the eggs get rotten after a few days. But this particular egg remained Intact and in good condition even after 1000 years.

But unfortunately, the IAA team could not preserve it as it was lying for the past 1000 years. Despite of taking utmost precautionary measures the egg shell got cracks and most of the yolk substance got out of it. But still one lucky aspect is that there is some yolk that remained inside the shell. This can be useful for DNA and other archaeological analytical tests or observations.

IAA posted its astonishment in Facebook. The statement says

A Cracking Find. Intact chicken egg dating from roughly 1,000 years ago was revealed during archaeological excavations in Yavne,

Dr. Lee Perry Gal, one of the Israel Antiquities Authority said –

Eggshell fragments are known from earlier periods, for example in the City of David and at Caesarea and Apollonia, but due to the eggs’ fragile shells, hardly any whole chicken eggs have been preserved. Even at the global level, this is an extremely rare find,
