Chasing a total of 158 runs to win, England lost the opening batsman, Jos Butler without scoring a run. His partner Alex Hales could not score much and departed early. Dawid Malan tried to bring back England by scoring 35 runs from 37 balls. But under the DLS method because of rain, England fell short of 5 runs in clinching the win. After 14.3 overs, England was 105/5 and the match was in favour of Ireland.
After the match, England Skipper Jos Buttler said –
I think we should let it hurt, to be honest,
I think days like today are really, really disappointing, and you’ve got to feel that. There’s no point in saying let’s sweep it under the carpet and move on.
I think we’ve got to reflect — we’ve got to do it quickly obviously with a game soon after, but today should hurt.
It was getting quite heavy. Of course, we’d love to stay on and try to hit a couple of sixes if we could, but it got heavy. I think the game was lost before that point. I think we were a long way short of where we needed to be right throughout the game, and Ireland deserved to win.
On Friday, England will face arch-rivals Australia at the MCG itself. Both the teams have lost a match each.
