Fine Gael party leader and the present Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar lost the majority in the Ireland General elections 2020 after the results announcement.

Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and Sinn Fein are the three largest parties that have participated in the Ireland General Elections 2020.

Sinn Fein party President, Mary Lou McDonald emerged as the second-largest party in the winning table and lead the election results with 37 seats with just 1 seat behind the top seat winning party Fianna Fail.

Ruling Fine Gael Party has secured only the third place after the Ireland General elections 2020 results. This tight election results may lead to lengthy negotiations to form a government.

When compared to the previous elections in 2016, the following is the performance of the political parties in Ireland

  • Sinn Fein had won 37 seats – An increase of 14 seats
  • Fianna Fail won 38 seats – Decline of 6 seats
  • Fine Gael won 35 seats – Decline of 15 seats
  • Green Party won 12 seats – An increase of 10 seats

It will be now an interesting point as to how the upcoming government will deal with the post BREXIT situation. Though BREXIT issue during the post-election campaign did not show any impact on the results, the future trade is dependent on the upcoming government’s policies for trade and commerce.

Mainly the election campaign went on the issues based on homelessness, health and unemployment. The expectations now lie on Sinn Fein to form a government as the two major parties Fianna Fail and Fine Gael have ruled out any possibility of entering into a coalition before the elections itself.

It is expected that Mary Lou McDonald (Sinn Fein) and Micheal Martin (Fianna Fail) may come together to form the new government.
