Microsoft Skype To Bid Farewell On May 5, 2025

Skype, once a leading video-calling platform is set to shut down this month by 5th. Microsoft stated that the key reason is to focus on “Teams“. All the existing Skype users can now move to Teams. Skype will no longer be available after May 5, 2025.

Launched in 2003, Skype was the most popular video-calling platform. The tenure lasted for almost over 2 decades.it marked the first time ordinary people could access free computer-to-computer audio and video calls across the globe – and shifted our landline and mobile calls onto the internet.

Microsoft’s decision to discontinue Skype, forms part of a broader strategy to consolidate its consumer communication platforms and concentrate efforts on Microsoft Teams. Teams is now positioned as its primary hub for modern communication and collaboration. In a statement, Microsoft  said –

In order to streamline our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs, we will be retiring Skype in May 2025 to focus on Microsoft Teams (free), our modern communications and collaboration hub.

Teams is the new Skype

  1. Microsoft plans to transfer Skype users to Teams
  2. Paid users will retain access to the Skype Dial Pad, either via the Skype web portal or directly through Microsoft Teams.
  3. Skype Credit and calling plans will be available in Teams until the conclusion of their next renewal cycle.
  4. Current subscribers can continue to use their existing credit and active subscriptions.
  5. Transitioning from Skype to Microsoft Teams will be straightforward using their existing Skype credentials.
  6. Both platforms have a lot of similar features, including one-on-one and group calls, messaging, and file sharing.
  7. Teams offers enhanced functionality such as calendar integration and community-based tools.
  8. Skype was a neat and clean video-calling platform, now Microsoft is focused on working on Teams.
  9. Upon signing in, all contacts, messages, and conversations will be seamlessly carried over to Teams.
  10. Teams users can pick up exactly where they left off in Skype.
